It Is Hard to Possess a Sense of Belonging When We Are Unsure of Our Own Identity Essay Example for Free
It Is Hard to Possess a Sense of Belonging When We Are Unsure of Our Own Identity Essay The journey in finding our identity and belonging can often be a struggle, since we ask ourselves, ââ¬Ëwho am Iââ¬â¢ vs. whom do others want me to be? And where do I belong? This point in our live is subjective, because we want to feel accepted in society we deny ourselves of what we really are. Itââ¬â¢s hard to have a sense of belonging when we ourselves are unsure of our own identity. There comes a time where our opinions and beliefs are differentiated from those around us, during this time some people may discover where they belong, where as many others do not. We are all different in our own ways no one is born equally some may take their differences as an advantage and some take it as a disadvantage and tries to hide this imperfection in order to fit in. Although we all live in the same world we are all different be it the shape of our eyes, the colour of our skin, the country we were born or the accent that we speak in and to others their sexuality. These are all the traits that come together and create our identity, however this differences are sometimes not accepted in the society that we live in, and the sad part is that even if we know what we really are deep inside, our society tells us otherwise. Shuffling through the book Growing up Asian in Australia, I read a lot of stories that made me feel nostalgic, having flashbacks in my head when I first step in Australia and the feeling of deja vu overwhelms me with emotions, while flipping through the stories I read something that caught my attention ââ¬ËMy First Kissââ¬â¢ by Lian Low. Her story is not something I would say that I could relate to completely, She grew up in country where ââ¬Ëhomosexuality is a criminal offenceââ¬â¢, and deep inside she knew she was different but her surrounding kept her from being true to herself, ââ¬Å"becoming more ââ¬Ëwomanly,ââ¬â¢ I suddenly lost foot of my tomboy worldâ⬠she denied herself in order for her to blend in. She wanted to be equal with the people around her but the difference canââ¬â¢t hide what she is ââ¬Å"I felt a foreigner whenever I open my mouth. Whenever I spoke my accent betrayed my originsâ⬠ââ¬Å"My attempt to blend in failed me as soon as I opened my mouthâ⬠. The reason why we are all unique is because we ultimately choose what does or does not impact us in a crucial or unimportant way, we have the choice to accept or deny our uniqueness but whichever we choses influences our form of distinctiveness. Everything and everyone can influence a personââ¬â¢s identity, while some influences can be minor, some can have a major effect on our lives just like Lian Lowââ¬â¢s story after concealing and denying her sexuality she finally learned to accept her difference after her first kiss with a girl. She erudite in writing that once became her source of comfort and used to bury herself with, ââ¬Å"Writing and performance have been outlets, `they have let me be myself, express myself and explore my multiple identities: Asian, woman, queer, migrant, Chinese-Malaysian-Australian. â⬠It is not solely one stage of our lives when we are confronted with an identity crisis, but a continuous challenge throughout our lives as we encounter new experience that will alter our thoughts, emotions and perspective on ourselves. We have to learn to love and accept our individuality, In order for us to feel welcomed and accepted by someone or something In fact as suggested by Maslowââ¬â¢s hierarchy of needs, a psychology theory cantered on humanââ¬â¢s innate desire of fulfilment, belonging is a need that we naturally seek in order to feel loved. Whether itââ¬â¢s belonging with your friendsââ¬â¢ family or surrounding, we need to embrace our individuality to know what we want, what we are, and what weââ¬â¢re not.

A school trip to France and the outcomes
A school trip to France and the outcomes Have you ever went on a vacation and never wanted to come back? I traveled to France in June of 2010, and it was the most beautiful place I have ever been to. I went with my high school French class and we took along eighteen students and six adults. We visited beautiful villages, towering cathedrals, and majestic palaces. This trip forever changed the way that I view the world, I realized that there is so much more to the world than our country, and that beautiful places await us just a place ride away. Our journey began in our high school parking lot where we loaded our bags and took a 4 hour bus ride to Washington D.C., once in the D.C. airport we sat in the airport for several hours until it was time for our plane to begin boarding. We boarded our plane and took our seats, the flight attendants instructed us on safety measures and we then waited for our plane to begin its journey to France. The pilot came over the intercom and informed us that we would now begin our ascension. The plane was soon speeding down the runway, and I was being pushed back into my seat, and then we were in the air, I felt my stomach lift as we left the ground and I knew that the next time I step on earth, I would be in France. Our plane ride was boring and uneventful, filled with many movies and unpleasant food. We began our descent and soon landed at the Airport just outside of Paris, though this was not our final destination. We then got off of the plane and continued to our next plane that would take us into the south of France, to Nice. We again waited in an airport for several hours until boarding time, once on the plane and up in the air, I realized that France is beautiful, it has picture perfect landscapes and farmland as far as I could see. This plane ride would be only one and a half hours long, only a fraction of the 8 hour flight to get to Paris. Once we were near Nice, I looked out the window and saw the most picturesque landscape I had ever seen, We were overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, the water was a gorgeous turquoise blue and the sun beat down onto the water making it shimmer like a sapphire. Once on the ground and our luggage retrieved, we got on a bus and drove to our hotel, the hotel was small, but quaint, and it felt like home. Later that day we went to the beach and laid in the sun and water for hours, after that we went shopping throughout the city for souvenirs. We spent three days in Nice, it was a laidback city, and there was not much too do, however it is still the most beautiful place I have ever visited. After out three days in Nice, we got on yet another bus, for a fourteen hour bus ride to the city of Tours. When we arrived in Tours we checked into our hotel and I had my daily breakfast of orange juice and a croissant. After breakfast we got on another bus and traveled for an hour to the Loire Valley, where most of the castles and palaces are located in France. We first went to the Chà ¯Ã ¿Ã ½teau of Chenonceau, a gorgeous castle situated over a river. After walking down a long path with tall trees lining the road, we emerged at the front door of a gorgeous white stone castle, complete with two gardens, and a hedge maze. After out visit at Chenonceau we went to the Chà ¯Ã ¿Ã ½teau of Chambord, a massive 16th century castle, rumored to be designed be Leonardo da Vinci, this castle as a marvelous double-helix spiral staircase that winds all the way up to the roof. On the roof you can view forest landscapes or examine the architecture of the building closer. Once we were done at Chambord we went to the Chartres Cathedral, which is considered one of the finest examples of gothic architecture in all of France. Inside the cathedral we climbed the many hundreds of stairs to the topmost tower, which also provided us with a closer view of this fantastic piece of architecture. The stained glass windows are Chartres are among the greatest in the world, which are known for their vivid blue color. Upon seeing the blue, I was immediately transfixed and walked around examining each window until I finished. After leaving Chartres we returned to Tours and had ourselves a much needed night of sleep. After getting on yet another bus, we then moved on the walled city of St.Malo. We did not get to do much in this city as we arrived in the early evening hours. During World War II almost the entire city was destroyed, but the townspeople wanted to rebuild and they did so, they rebuilt it the exact same way as it was originally built, so this city was essentially built twice. After our night in St.Malo we traveled to Normandy. We toured the Normandy museum and then went to the American Memorial on the beaches. The memorial was extremely emotional, but serene at the same time. While on the beaches I imagined the carnage that took place where I stood. I could not believe that just 70 years before the sand and water was stained red with blood and their were thousands of bodies laying on the beach. As I walked around the memorial I looked upon the cemetery and saw the thousands of people that fought and died on the fateful day. While walking through the cemetery I saw one tombstone with a Jewish star on top instead of a cross, I instantly felt a flood of emotion, I thought that while Hitler was killing so many Jewish, the Jewish were fighting and dying for the United States, I will forever remember that image and will always be grateful for what the soldiers have done for us. We then returned to St.Malo for another night of sleep and the next morning began our journey to Paris, the city of lights. When we entered the city we immediately went to our hotel and then went to dinner. We had dinner at Chez Clement, which is located steps away from the Arc de Triomphe. After out dinner we went into the Arc and went up yet another endless flight of steps until we reached the top. At the top of the Arc we saw a panoramic view of the Paris, the Eiffel Tower glowing the distance, and Parisian nightlife beginning. Every night on the hour the Eiffel Tower sparkles, thousands of blue lights illuminate and last for one minute, while at the Arc we witnessed this. It is without a doubt one of the most beautiful things I will ever see. I filled me with delight and at that moment I knew that I never wanted to leave the country. During our next day in Paris we went to the Chà ¯Ã ¿Ã ½teau of . First in the morning we took a forty minute bus ride to Versailles and began our tour of the building. The building was the most elaborate thing I have ever seen, it was dripping in gleaming gold, and shimmering crystal. The walls were lined with expensive silks and priceless tapestries. Although this Palace has a gorgeous appearance, it has a dark history. Versailles is the palace in which Marie Antoinette and Louis XIV lived, an angry mob descended upon the Palace and took the royal family to Paris, where many years later killed them. Even though the building itself was massive it had even larger more extravagant gardens that stretched miles. It has several fountains which all were running while I was there. While sitting on the steps watching the fountains I imagined everyday life here in the 18th century, what it would be like to live there, to walk around the gardens at a leisurely pace and not have a care in th e world. Versailles is and forever will be the most gorgeous building I have ever visited. Not just because of its expensive dà ¯Ã ¿Ã ½cor, but also because it is a supreme example of architecture and a fantastic example of traditional French gardens. After our visit to Versailles we went back to Paris and toured the Louvre Museum. At the Louvre Museum we walked through the marvelous glass pyramid and immersed ourselves into a building filled with gorgeous pieces of art and rich in history. The first thing I wished to go and see was the Winged Victory of Samothrace, it is a second century BC marble sculpture of the Greek goddess Nike, to me it is one of the most beautiful sculptures in the entire world, and it amazed me that something so perfect could be created without any modern technology. The only other sculpture that can rival the Winged Victory of Samothrace is the Venus de Milo, which is where I went to next. The Venus de Milo is arguably the most famous sculpture in the world, most people can recognize the armless figure. The Venus de Milo is a fantastic example of Greek sculpture at its finest, and will forever influence the world as we know it. The highlight of my tour of the Louvre is that of the Mona Lisa. The Mona Lis a painted by Leonardo da Vinci in the early 16th century, it is the most famous painting the in entire world and also one of the most visited. The Mona Lisa, to me it a fantastic painting, and will forever continue to influence artists around the world, and also continue to be a major icon of the world also. On our last day in France we packed our things and went to the airport and began the long and tedious flight home to the United States. I was extremely unhappy about leaving and wanted to extend my stay permanently. I learned so much on my vacation, some of which I would not be able to learn without being in the country, and I hope to return many times in the future. Also, the trip gave me a whole new perceptive on the world, and taught me to look at the details in things and not just what they appear to be. From the cities, to the churches, and even the castles, France made we want to learn more about art and architecture, and in particular the renaissance works, it also made me realize that no matter what country you live in, you can always find a masterpiece.

Necessary Evil for Men vs. Sexual Exploitation of Women :: social issues
Necessary Evil for Men vs. Sexual Exploitation of Women Abuse ââ¬â transitive verb 1: to put to a wrong or improper use; 2: obsolete (deceive); 3: to use so as to injure or damage (maltreat); 4: to attack in words (revile). noun 1: a corrupt practice or custom; 2: improper or excessive use or treatment (misuse); a deceitful act (deception); 4: language that condemns or vilifies usually unjustly, intemperately, and angrily; 5: physical maltreatment. Abuse, in any and all of its forms, is something many Korean women and girls deal with every day. In 2002, a survey done by the Korean Institute of Criminology, the number of sex purchases in Korea equaled to 4.4 of the countries GDP (Gross Domestic Product), almost the same as agriculture, forestry, and fishing industries combined. The survey also showed that there were at least 33,000 women working in prostitution. 8% of women working in Korea in their twenties and thirties were prostitutes. Also, a survey done by the Korea Womenââ¬â¢s Hot Line showed that 42.6% of Korean men have purchased sexual service when having a drink. 12.9% of men said that they have bought sex when on business. 41.3% of all Koreans did not know that prostitution was illegal in Korea. Despite these outrageous numbers, prostitution has been illegal in Korea since 1961. A common place that prostitution takes place in is Miari Texas Village (Also known as Miari Texas, Texas Village, Texas Miari, or just plain Miari.) an area in north-eastern Seoul, with over 250 prostitution houses. In these houses, liquor and food are served in the front and in the back, sex services take place in the back rooms. On average, a woman will see five to ten men a night. The women usually get paid 1.5 million won ($1, 340.00) monthly, along with 1,500 won ($14.00) for each client they see. One very disturbing thing about Miari Texas is that 30% of about 1,000 prostitutes are under the age of eighteen. Even though prostitution is illegal, it is tolerated, if the women are over eighteen. Many of the young prostitutes in Miari Texas are runaways who feel they have nothing more to lose. The first prostitution house (brothel) was established in the 1920ââ¬â¢s when Korean women were taken as sex slaves by the Japanese military during the Japanese occupation of Korea (1910 ââ¬â 1945). After the Korean war ended in 1953, the large American military presence led to the building of ââ¬Å"camp town prostitutionâ⬠for the U.

Allieââ¬â¢s Basketball Dream Essay -- Literary Analysis, Barbara Barber
Allieââ¬â¢s Basketball Dream Just by looking at the cover of the story ââ¬Å"Allieââ¬â¢s Basketball Dreamâ⬠by Barbara Barber I could already tell that the story itself seems to be an ideology. The ideology is not hard to figure out; even the name of the story gives it away. Most girls dream of being a ballerina, a princess, or even a vet but with Allieââ¬â¢s case she wants to be professional basketball player. When I first picked up this book, the name of the book intrigued me to want to read it because I never would have guessed a girls dream would be to be a professional basketball player. As I started to read this book I noticed that the book is based on adults and children of African-American race in urban and inner-city areas. In urban and inner-city areas, playground basketball is a popular form of recreation. Many children and adults in these areas play neighborhood games in parks, alleys, driveways, backyards, and playgrounds. In the neighborhood I was brought up in, I never saw basketball played anywhere besides at school or if you had a basketball hoop in your driveway. The story starts out with Allies father giving her a gift of a basketball that she really wanted. Allies father brought her a gift and said ââ¬Å"Because I love you (Baber 2)â⬠and kissed Allie on her nose. This shows that Allies father is already portrayed as strong and caring which makes this book adult-centered already. When I look at the picture of Allie and her father at the beginning of the book I can see the loving relationship they have with each other (1). The colors of the background of the picture are yellow and soft which makes the picture safe. Allie and her father are in the center of the page along with the basket ball. This shows that Allie, her fat... ...he first time her father brought her to a basketball game she said "No way i'm getting rid of this ball! It's a gift from my dad. Someday I'm going to be the best basketball player ever (Barber 20)." Even though Allie doesnââ¬â¢t say something like "I don't want to be girly" she is still resisting the ideology that ââ¬Å"only guys play basketballâ⬠or ââ¬Å"girls donââ¬â¢t play basketball.â⬠In this book gender role interpellation is shown. Up to now, it has been assumed that boys are more dominant and powerful then girls. For example, boys ââ¬Å"are strongerâ⬠and can protect better then woman because they are men and they are built differently. However, females have been seen are the care takers, compassionate, and taking on the role of being feminine which means acting and doing all the things girls are supposed to do. Also, females are portrayed as being more ââ¬Å"emotionalâ⬠then males.

Scheele and Oxygen :: essays research papers
Oxygen Vital to life, a necessity to combustion, and the component of innumerable compounds, oxygen is by far one of the most important elements. Astoundingly, Oxygen makes up a fifth of our atmosphere, 49.5% of all compounds on Earth contain oxygen, makes up about 2/3 of our body, yet human kind has only know of it since 1977 (http://pearl1.lanl.gov/periodic/elements/8.html). Ironically, within a period of a couple of years, three different men had stumbled upon the vital element. Carl Wilhelm Scheele, a Swede, made the initial discovery. However, Joseph Priestly, the man generally attributed with the discovery on the basis of his works being published first, discovered it in 1774. Neither of them quite understood it though, and only a French man by the name of Antoine Lavoisier who would be the first to fully understand it and disprove the old à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã
âphlogistonà ¢Ã¢â ¬? notion (Priestly Joseph 4). Nonetheless, Carl Wilhelm Scheele was still the first to discover oxygen, a disc overy that would be one of many in a rich life. William Scheeleà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s life was one of humble beginnings. Born on December 19, 1742 he was one of a pack of 11 children. His formal training or education in science was of the bare minimum. By the age of fourteen, a firm by the name of Martin Anders Bauch in Gothenburg had accepted him as an apprentice as a pharmacist. This initial access to various chemicals, compounds, and books gave Wilhelm Scheele just he start he needed for beginning his career into chemistry. When the firm changed hands, Carl Wilhelm Scheele took a job with another company name KjellstrÃÆ'à ¶m where, once again, he was provided the mean and permission to experiment. Scheele once again changed positions and moved to Stockholm where he continued in a pharmacy. Here his first discoveries were made (http://mattson.creighton.edu/History_Gas_Chemistry/Scheele.html). In 1769 with the help of a man named Anders John Retzius, Scheele isolated tartaric acid, a substance used on lenses, from cream of tartar (Tartaric Acid 1). Scheele made his big break however in 1770. Through various methods, Scheele was able to isolate oxygen. His discovery of à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã
âFire Airà ¢Ã¢â ¬? precipitated numerous awards including a membership to the Royal Academy of Sciences, a position never before, and not even to present day to be given to a pharmacist (http://mattson.creighton.edu/History_Gas_Chemistry/Scheele.html). His home town, in an effort to keep him, also found him a place to set up his pharmacy.

Bloodlines Chapter Seven
ââ¬Å"ADRIAN?â⬠I SAID IN SURPRISE. ââ¬Å"What's he have to do with any of this?â⬠Jill simply shook her head and looked at me beseechingly. ââ¬Å"Please. Just take me to him.â⬠ââ¬Å"But we'll be back there in a couple days for your feeding.â⬠ââ¬Å"I know,â⬠said Jill. ââ¬Å"But I need to see him now. He's the only one who will understand.â⬠I found that hard to believe. ââ¬Å"You're saying I wouldn't? Or that even Eddie wouldn't?â⬠She groaned. ââ¬Å"No. You can't tell Eddie. He'll flip out.â⬠I tried not to frown as I mulled everything over. Why would Jill need to see Adrian after this mishap at school? Adrian couldn't do anything to help that I couldn't. As an Alchemist, I was in the best position to file a complaint. Did Jill just want moral support? I remembered how Jill had hugged Adrian goodbye and suddenly wondered if she had a crush on him. Because surely, if Jill needed to feel protected by someone, Eddie would be a better source to turn to. Or would he? Eddie was likely to go throwing office desks around in his outrage. Keeping this from him might not be a bad idea. ââ¬Å"Okay,â⬠I said at last. ââ¬Å"Let's go.â⬠I signed us out for off-campus travel, which took a little finagling. Mrs. Weathers was quick to point out that Jill had been banished to her dorm for the rest of the school day. I was equally quick to point out that classes were almost done, technically meaning the school day was almost finished. Mrs. Weathers couldn't fault the logic but still made us wait the full ten minutes until the last bell rang. Jill sat there, tapping her foot anxiously against the chair. We drove the half hour to Clarence's estate in the hills, saying little. I didn't really know what kind of small talk to make. ââ¬Å"How was your first day of school?â⬠was hardly an appropriate topic. And anyway, each time I thought about it, I just grew angrier. I couldn't believe any teacher would have the audacity to accuse Jill of drinking and having a hangover. There was really no way to prove something like that, and besides, you could tell after spending five minutes with her that it was impossible. A middle-aged human woman greeted us at the door. Her name was Dorothy, and she was Clarence's housekeeper and feeder. Dorothy was pleasant enough, if a little distracted, and wore a stiff gray dress with a high collar to hide the bite marks on her neck. I smiled back at her and maintained my professional mode but couldn't help a shudder when I thought about what she was. How could anyone do that? How could anyone offer their blood up willingly like that? My stomach lurched, and I found myself keeping my distance from her. I didn't even want to accidentally brush her arm when I walked past. Dorothy escorted us back to the room we'd all been sitting in the day before. There was no sign of Clarence, but Adrian was lying on a plush green couch, watching a TV that had been cleverly concealed inside an ornate wooden cabinet last time. When he saw us, he turned the TV off with a remote control and sat up. Dorothy excused herself and shut the French doors behind her. ââ¬Å"Well, this is a nice surprise,â⬠he said. He looked us over. Jill had changed into her normal clothes during her isolation today, but I still had on the Amberwood blouse and skirt. ââ¬Å"Sage, aren't you guys supposed to have uniforms? This looks like what you usually wear.â⬠ââ¬Å"Cute,â⬠I said, suppressing an eye roll. Adrian gave me a mock bow. ââ¬Å"Careful. You almost smiled.â⬠He reached for a bottle of brandy sitting on a nearby table. Small glasses were arranged around it, and he poured himself a generous amount. ââ¬Å"You guys want one?â⬠ââ¬Å"It's the middle of the afternoon,â⬠I said incredulously. Not that it'd really matter for me what time of day it was. ââ¬Å"I've got a wicked hangover,â⬠he declared, giving us a mock toast. ââ¬Å"This is just the thing to cure it.â⬠ââ¬Å"Adrian, I need to talk to you,â⬠said Jill earnestly. He looked over at her, the smirk fading from his face. ââ¬Å"What's up, Jailbait?â⬠Jill glanced uneasily at me. ââ¬Å"Would you mindâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ I took the hint and tried not to let on how irritated I was by all the secrets. ââ¬Å"Sure. I'll justâ⬠¦ I'll just go outside again.â⬠I didn't like the idea of being exiled, but no way was I going to wander the halls of the old house. I'd face the heat. I hadn't gotten very far down the hall when someone stepped out in front of me. I let out a small scream and nearly jumped three feet in the air. A heartbeat later, I realized it was Lee ââ¬â not that it reassured me much. No matter how ostensibly friendly I was with this group, old defenses inside me kicked up at being alone with a new vampire. Running into him didn't help matters either because my brain processed it as an attack! Lee just stood there, staring at me. From the expression on his face, he was just as startled to find me in his house ââ¬â though perhaps not quite as alarmed about it as I was. ââ¬Å"Sydney?â⬠asked Lee. ââ¬Å"What are you doing here?â⬠Within moments, my fear became embarrassment, like I'd been caught prowling. ââ¬Å"Ohâ⬠¦ I'm here with Jill. She had kind of a rough day and needed to talk to Adrian. I wanted to give them some privacy and was going to justâ⬠¦ uh, go outside.â⬠Lee's confusion transformed into a smile. ââ¬Å"You don't have to do that. No need for exile. Come on, I was going to get a snack in the kitchen.â⬠My face must have shown abject horror because he laughed. ââ¬Å"Not the human kind.â⬠I blushed and followed along with him. ââ¬Å"Sorry,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"It's instinct.â⬠ââ¬Å"No problem. You Alchemists are kind of jumpy, you know.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah.â⬠I laughed uncomfortably. ââ¬Å"I know.â⬠ââ¬Å"I've always wanted to meet one of you, but you guys certainly aren't what I expected.â⬠He opened the door to a spacious kitchen. The rest of the house might be antique and gloomy, but inside here, everything was bright and modern. ââ¬Å"If it makes you feel any better, you're not as bad as Keith. He was here earlier today and was so nervous, he literally kept looking over his shoulder.â⬠Lee paused thoughtfully. ââ¬Å"I think it might have been because Adrian kept laughing like a mad scientist at those old black-and-white movies he was watching.â⬠I came to an abrupt stop. ââ¬Å"Keith was here ââ¬â today? What for?â⬠ââ¬Å"You'd have to ask Dad. That's who he talked to the most.â⬠Lee opened the refrigerator and produced a can of Coke. ââ¬Å"Want one?â⬠ââ¬Å"I ââ¬â uh, no. Too much sugar.â⬠He grabbed another can. ââ¬Å"Diet?â⬠I hesitated only a moment before taking it. ââ¬Å"Sure. Thanks.â⬠I hadn't intended to eat or drink anything in this house, but the can seemed safe enough. It was sealed and looked like it had come straight from a human grocery store, not some vampiric cauldron. I opened it and took a sip as my mind spun. ââ¬Å"You have no idea at all what it was about?â⬠ââ¬Å"Huh?â⬠Lee had added an apple to his menu and hoisted himself up so he sat on the counter. ââ¬Å"Oh, Keith? No. But if I had to guess, it was about me. Like he was trying to figure out if I'm staying here or not.â⬠He took a giant bite into the apple, and I wondered if having fangs made that harder at all. ââ¬Å"He just likes his facts straight,â⬠I said neutrally. As much as I disliked Keith, I still wanted a unified human front. I wasn't entirely inaccurate, though. I was pretty sure Keith felt undermined at learning there was one extra Moroi in ââ¬Å"his territoryâ⬠and was now making sure he was in on everything. Part of it was good Alchemist business, sure, but most was probably Keith's wounded pride. Lee didn't seem to think much of it and kept chewing his apple, though I could feel his eyes studying me. ââ¬Å"You said Jill had a bad day? Is everything okay?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah, I think so. I mean, I don't know. I'm not even sure how things got messed up. She wanted to see Adrian for some reason. Maybe he can help.â⬠ââ¬Å"He's Moroi,â⬠said Lee pragmatically. ââ¬Å"Maybe it's just something only he could understand ââ¬â something you and Eddie couldn't. No offense.â⬠ââ¬Å"None taken,â⬠I said. It was only natural that Jill and I would have distinct differences ââ¬â I was a human, and she was a vampire, after all. We couldn't be more different if we tried, and in fact, I kind of preferred it that way. ââ¬Å"You go to collegeâ⬠¦ in Los Angeles? A human school?â⬠It wasn't that weird a behavior for Moroi. Sometimes they stuck together in their own communities; sometimes they tried to blend into large human cities. Lee nodded. ââ¬Å"Yup. And it was hard for me at first too. I mean, even without others obviously knowing you're a vampireâ⬠¦ well, there's just a sense of otherness you're always aware of. I eventually adjustedâ⬠¦ but I know what she's going through.â⬠ââ¬Å"Poor Jill,â⬠I said, suddenly realizing I'd come at this situation all wrong. Most of my energy had been fixed on the school believing Jill's illness was a hangover. I should've focused on why she was sick in the first place. Anxiety over this new life change had to be taking its toll. I'd battled my own uneasiness, trying to figure out friendships and social cues ââ¬â but at least I was still dealing with my own race. ââ¬Å"I didn't really think about what she's going through.â⬠ââ¬Å"Do you want me to talk to her?â⬠asked Lee. He set the apple core aside. ââ¬Å"Not that I'm sure I have that much wisdom to share.â⬠ââ¬Å"Anything might help,â⬠I said honestly. A silence fell between us, and I began to feel uneasy. Lee seemed very friendly, but my old fears were too ingrained. Part of me felt like he didn't so much want to get to know me as study me. Alchemists were clearly a novelty to him. ââ¬Å"Do you mind me askingâ⬠¦ the tattoo. It gives you special powers, right?â⬠It was nearly a repeat of the conversation at school, except Lee actually knew the truth behind it. I absentmindedly touched my cheek. ââ¬Å"Not powers, exactly. There's compulsion in it to keep us from talking about what we do. And I get a good immune system out of it. But the rest? I'm nothing special.â⬠ââ¬Å"Fascinating,â⬠he murmured. I looked away uneasily and tried to casually brush my hair back into my face. Adrian stuck his head in just then. All his earlier humor was gone. ââ¬Å"Ah, there you are. Can I talk to you in private for a sec?â⬠The question was directed to me, and Lee jumped off the counter. ââ¬Å"I'll take the cue. Is Jill still in the den?â⬠Adrian nodded, and Lee glanced at me questioningly. ââ¬Å"Do you want me toâ⬠¦ ?â⬠I nodded. ââ¬Å"That'd be great. Thank you.â⬠Lee left, and Adrian glanced back at me curiously. ââ¬Å"What was that about?â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh, we thought Lee might be able to help Jill with her problems,â⬠I explained. ââ¬Å"Since he can relate.â⬠ââ¬Å"Problems?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah, you know. Adjusting to living with humans.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh,â⬠said Adrian. He produced a pack of cigarettes and, to my complete astonishment, lit up right in front of me. ââ¬Å"That. Yeah, I guess that's good. But that's not what I wanted to talk to you about. I need you to get me out of this place.â⬠I was startled. This wasn't about Jill? ââ¬Å"Out of Palm Springs?â⬠I asked. ââ¬Å"No! Out of this place.â⬠He gestured around him. ââ¬Å"It's like living in a retirement home! Clarence is taking a nap right now, and he eats at five. It's so boring.â⬠ââ¬Å"You've only been here for two days.â⬠ââ¬Å"And that's more than enough. The only thing keeping me alive is that he keeps a hefty supply of liquor on hand. But at the rate I'm going, that'll be gone by the weekend. Jesus Christ, I'm climbing the walls.â⬠His eyes fell on the cross at my neck. ââ¬Å"Oh. Sorry. No offense to Jesus.â⬠I was still too baffled by the unexpected topic to feel much offense. ââ¬Å"What about Lee? He's here, right?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes,â⬠agreed Adrian. ââ¬Å"Sometimes. But he's busy withâ⬠¦ hell, I don't know. School stuff. He's going back to Los Angeles tomorrow, and that'll be another boring night for me. Besidesâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ He looked around conspiratorially. ââ¬Å"Lee's nice enough, but he's notâ⬠¦ well, he's not really into having fun. Not the way I am.â⬠ââ¬Å"That might be a good thing,â⬠I pointed out. ââ¬Å"No morality lectures, Sage. And hey, like I said, I like him okay, but he's not here enough. When he is, he keeps to himself. He's always checking himself out in the mirror, even more than I do. I heard him worrying about gray hair the other day.â⬠I didn't care about Lee's eccentricities. ââ¬Å"Where would you even want to go? You don't wantâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ A very unpleasant thought came to me. ââ¬Å"You don't want to enroll at Amberwood, do you?â⬠ââ¬Å"What, and play 21 Jump Street with the rest of you? No, thank you.â⬠ââ¬Å"Twenty-one what?â⬠ââ¬Å"Never mind. Look.â⬠He put out the cigarette ââ¬â on the counter ââ¬â which I thought was kind of ridiculous since he'd hardly smoked any of it. Why bother with such a filthy habit if you weren't going to use it all? ââ¬Å"I need my own place, okay? You guys make things happen. Can't you get me some swank bachelor's pad like Keith has downtown so I can party with all the rich vacationers? Drinking alone is sad and pathetic. I need people. Even human people.â⬠ââ¬Å"No,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"I'm not authorized to do that. You aren'tâ⬠¦ well, you aren't really my responsibility. We're just taking care of Jill ââ¬â and Eddie, since he's her bodyguard.â⬠Adrian scowled. ââ¬Å"What about a car? Can you do that?â⬠I shook my head. ââ¬Å"What about your car? What if I drop you guys back off at the school and then borrow it for a while?â⬠ââ¬Å"No,â⬠I said swiftly. That was probably the craziest suggestion he could've made. Latte was my baby. I certainly wasn't about to lend it out to a heavy drinker ââ¬â especially to one who also happened to be a vampire. If there was ever a vampire who seemed particularly irresponsible, it was Adrian Ivashkov. ââ¬Å"You're killing me here, Sage!â⬠ââ¬Å"I'm not doing anything.â⬠ââ¬Å"Exactly my point.â⬠ââ¬Å"Look,â⬠I said, growing irritated. ââ¬Å"I told you. You're not my responsibility. Talk to Abe if you want things changed. Isn't he the reason you're here?â⬠Adrian's annoyance and self-pity shifted to wariness. ââ¬Å"What do you know about that?â⬠Right. He didn't know I'd overheard their conversation. ââ¬Å"I mean, he's the one who brought you guys here and made the arrangements with Clarence, right?â⬠I hoped that would be convincing enough ââ¬â and maybe yield me a little information on what Abe's master plan was. ââ¬Å"Yes,â⬠Adrian said, after several seconds of intense scrutiny. ââ¬Å"But Abe wants me to stay in this tomb. If I got my own place, we'd have to keep it secret from him.â⬠I scoffed. ââ¬Å"Then I'm definitely not helping, even if I could. You couldn't pay me to cross Abe.â⬠I could see Adrian bracing for another argument and decided to make my exit. Turning my back on him and any further protests, I headed out of the kitchen and back to the living room. There, I found Jill and Lee talking, and she wore the first genuine smile I'd seen in a while. She laughed at some comment he made and then looked up at my entrance. ââ¬Å"Hey, Sydney,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"Hey,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Are you about ready to go?â⬠ââ¬Å"Is it time?â⬠she asked. Both she and Lee looked disappointed, but then she answered her own question. ââ¬Å"I guess it is. You probably have homework, and Eddie's probably worried already.â⬠Adrian entered the room behind me, looking pouty. Jill glanced at him, and for a moment, her gaze turned inward, like her mind had gone somewhere else. Then she turned back to me. ââ¬Å"Yeah,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"We should go. I hope we can talk later, Lee.â⬠ââ¬Å"Me too,â⬠he said, standing up. ââ¬Å"I'll be around here, off and on.â⬠Jill hugged Adrian goodbye, clearly reluctant to be leaving him too. With Lee, she'd looked mostly like she was sad to leave something that had just gotten interesting. With Adrian, there was more of a sense like she wasn't sure how she was going to get by. Her next scheduled feeding was in two days, and Adrian was encouraging, telling her she was strong enough to get through the next school day. Despite how much he kept annoying me, I was moved by his compassion for the younger girl. Anyone who was that nice to Jill couldn't be that bad. He was starting to surprise me. ââ¬Å"You look better,â⬠I told her as we drove toward Vista Azul. ââ¬Å"Talking to Adrianâ⬠¦ to both of themâ⬠¦ it was helpful.â⬠ââ¬Å"Do you think you'll be okay tomorrow?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah.â⬠Jill sighed and leaned back against the seat. ââ¬Å"It was just nerves. That, and I didn't eat much breakfast.â⬠ââ¬Å"Jillâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ I bit my lip, hesitant to plunge forward. Confrontation wasn't my strong suit, particularly with awkward personal topics. ââ¬Å"You and Adrianâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Jill gave me a wary look. ââ¬Å"What about us?â⬠ââ¬Å"Is there anythingâ⬠¦ I mean, are you guysâ⬠¦ ?â⬠ââ¬Å"No!â⬠Out of the corner of her eye, I saw Jill turn bright pink. It was the most color I had ever seen in a vampire's face. ââ¬Å"Why would you say that?â⬠ââ¬Å"Well. You were sick this morning. And then really adamant about seeing Adrian. You're always sad to leave him tooâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Jill gaped. ââ¬Å"Do you think I'm pregnant?â⬠ââ¬Å"Not exactly,â⬠I said, realizing it was kind of a nonsensical answer. ââ¬Å"I mean, maybe. I don't know. I'm just considering all the possibilitiesâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ââ¬Å"Well, don't consider that one! There's nothing going on between us. Nothing. We're friends. He'd never be interested in me.â⬠She said it with a dismal certainty ââ¬â and maybe even a little wistfully. ââ¬Å"That's not true,â⬠I said, fumbling to undo the damage. ââ¬Å"I mean, you're younger, yeah, but you're cuteâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Yes, this was a terrible conversation. I was just babbling now. ââ¬Å"Don't,â⬠said Jill. ââ¬Å"Don't tell me I'm nice and pretty and have a lot to offer. Or whatever. None of that matters. Not when he's still hung up on her.â⬠ââ¬Å"Her? Oh. Rose.â⬠I'd nearly forgotten. The trip to Court had been the first time I'd seen Adrian in person, but I'd actually seen him once before on security camera footage when he'd been at a casino with Rose. The two of them had dated, though I wasn't entirely sure how serious the relationship had been. When I'd helped Rose and Dimitri escape, the chemistry between those two had been off the charts, even if they'd both been in denial of it. Even I'd been able to spot it a mile away, and I knew next to nothing about romance. Seeing as Rose and Dimitri were officially a couple now, I had to assume things with Adrian hadn't ended well. ââ¬Å"Yeah. Rose.â⬠Jill sighed and stared vacantly ahead. ââ¬Å"She's all he sees when he closes his eyes. Flashing dark eyes and a body full of fire and energy. No matter how much he tries to forget her, no matter how much he drinksâ⬠¦ she's always there. He can't escape her.â⬠Jill's voice dripped with astonishing bitterness. I might have written it off as jealousy, except that she talked as though she'd been personally been wronged by Rose too. ââ¬Å"Jill? Are you okay?â⬠ââ¬Å"Huh? Oh.â⬠Jill shook her head, like she was shaking off the cobwebs of a dream. ââ¬Å"Yeah, fine. Sorry. It's been a weird day. I'm a little out of it. Didn't you say we could pick up some things?â⬠A sign for the next exit advertised a shopping center. I rolled with the change in subject, glad to be away from personal matters, though I was still pretty confused. ââ¬Å"Uh, yeah. We need sunscreen. And maybe we can get a little TV for the room.â⬠ââ¬Å"That'd be great,â⬠said Jill. I left it at that and took the next exit. Neither of us spoke about Adrian for the rest of the night.
